Twitter May Be Upping Character Limit From 140 to 10,000

It's just a terrible plan. I heard about it on NPR yesterday.

People make huge long rants then post them on Twitter as images. So Twitter is upping the character limit to stop that from happening, so that they can make more money, essentially.

I'm going to post all my tweets as images now, just to spite them.

that's what I was thinking of, the image posts celebrities put up. I mean, if users are using weird roundabout screencaps to engage with your service there perhaps needs to be a solution. It's hard when character limits, though, are very much a part of "what Twitter is."

If Ryan is write and the length is hidden, that would, I think, encourage people to keep to the normal length except for extraordinary circumstances.

"How to Ruin a Good Thing" is being sponsored today by Twitter.

Seems like a bad idea but I don't know all the details. I love the challenge of the 140 character limit.

I'd like a Jeff's Corner piece on this in the next newsletter.

For all those worried about the readability of their Twitter feeds, take a look at this article from Ars Technica:

"...long tweets will be hidden behind some kind of user interaction to expand them, meaning that Twitter timelines will continue to pack in multiple tweets, and we won't be forced to scroll past long essays on the service. This means that the Twitter experience with longer tweets will be similar to the current one."

That's not to say that I think this is a good idea, but there are better arguments to be made.

It's still an awful idea, but this makes it slightly more bearable.

How about this, I support the 10,000 character limit if tweets have to be exactly 10,000 characters. anything 141-9,999 characters cannot be posted.

Yeah terrible. Stick to your niche. Classic example of trying to fix what's not broken
