According to a survey conducted by webdesignerwall.com, 1 out of 10 web designers do not think SEO is an important part of their job, while 24% do not even know what SEO is! Just to briefly summarize, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the process of improving the visibility of a Web site or a web page in search engines via the organic or non-paid search results. As a web designer, designing a web page, blog/article site requires the intricate workings of SEO, especially making sure that these pages can be found via the search engines.
On-site SEO is important as a web designer, because of the importance of making sure that your site is being found. If your site is not search engine friendly by means of keywords, online traffic may not be able to find it.
If you think about it, you probably get a large number of site visitors from search engine results; if you do not have great on-site SEO, you lose a large percentage of your site traffic. On-site SEO includes HTML markups, target keywords, internal linking, site structure, etc. Creating the most relevant homepage is extremely important, especially because this is where the web spiders start their spinning. Your homepage should include at least a set of target keywords and links to important pages. You should also make sure that you do not have text within a flash image due to the fact that the spiders will not recognize the text thus not referring it to the search engine queries.
Internal pages should have proper links from the homepage with relevant keywords involved. The anchor text on pages should contain text that is relevant to a particular theme on the page rather than a regular “click here” text, it should be “click here for SEO info.” As previously mentioned, keywords are extremely important when it comes to search engines finding your site. Keywords should be listed in the following ways: -Title Tag -Page URL, one that is friendly (www.Semify.com/home-page) -Main Heading -First paragraph of content -At least 3 relevant times in the main content
However, make sure that you do not commit the Internet crime of keyword stuffing--we want the keywords to make sense on the page as well as provide a variety of keywords.
As you continue to build your Web site, remember to carefully link, choose relevant keywords (no stuffing), proper title tags, and keep all content relevant to keyword terms. You don’t want a high bounce rate, but that’s a completely different topic. Remember, SEO is important to the web designer, after all, don’t you want traffic coming to your masterpiece?
