Server: A server is a computer that exclusively manages and stores files and "serves" them to other computers in the same local network or via the Internet. Purchasing storage space on a dedicated server can typically cost anywhere from $100 to $500 per month, while virtual servers cost between $5 and $5 per month.
There are a number of different varieties of servers; here are some of the most widely-used:
Web servers: The most common type of server, a web server is essentially a computer system or program that multiple users can access. Typically used by companies and businesses, these servers frequently have peer-to-peer access so all employees can access the files stored there.
Proxy servers: A proxy server is any computer system that acts on a user's behalf to cut off the connection between a sender and receiver of information. Proxy servers are typically used to strengthen firewalls, as they can keep attackers out of a private network.
Cloud computing servers: When data is stored in "the cloud," it simply means it's being stored in a remote server that can be accessed from any geographic location where there's an Internet connection. Many companies have transferred their data to the cloud, as it opens up opportunities for telecommuting, increasing employee efficiency.
