The 5 Things It Takes to Resell SEO

If you’re working in the area of online marketing or website development, you know how important search engine optimization is to business success. A full 93% of web experiences start with search engine queries, and users choose organic results over paid ones 70% to 80% of the time. But building up an SEO program takes a significant amount of time and expertise.

A better way for many small agencies to get into the market is to resell SEO plans from a larger company.

Here’s what you need to resell SEO:

1. Strong Sales Skills

Unsurprisingly, the number one skill you need to resell SEO is being great at sales in general. In one sense, your job isn’t to sell SEO services as much as it is to sell SEO ideas; someone else will be taking care of the detail work, but you need to be able to articulate what SEO is and why it matters. The way you communicate that knowledge and the rapport you built with a prospective client is the most important part of that process.

2. Product Knowledge

You don’t need to know exactly how to do all the steps that add up to great SEO strategy. But you do need to know enough about general SEO ideas and the strategies behind your outsourced reseller’s products to be persuasive and guide your clients toward the product plans that will be most effective for their unique situations. What kind of content should be used? How much should be invested in SEO versus complementary processes such as pay per click advertising and social engagement? You should choose an SEO reseller program that offers you regular training and doesn’t leave you on your own when you’re struggling to answer those questions, however.

3. Platform Training

This is simply a process that you’ll need to go through, rather than an inherent skill you should already have. Resellers can offer white label (also called private label) SEO services, but this is achieved primarily through a web-based platform. Therefore, you’ll need to familiarize yourself with it to the point that you can both navigate it comfortably yourself and guide your client on its use.

4. Customer Service

If you’re using a white label SEO service, then your end client won’t even know that you’ve outsourced the technical details. That means that both good and bad customer experiences will reflect back on you and your agency, and you need to be proactive in offering prompt, personal and friendly customer service.

5. End-Client Meetings

The work your reseller does to build a successful SEO campaign will depend largely on information you pass on from your client. Since your reseller will only have limited electronic communication with your end clients, it’s important that you have one-on-one meetings on at least a monthly basis to make sure everything is still running smoothly.
